the Bite
Fire & BloodThe Bite is the sea around the Three Sisters, whose lords briefly declared independence during the upheaval of Aegon’s Conquest. Its position made the islands a contested edge of the new realm: after the Arryn fleet had been largely destroyed, the crown had to send forces across the water to restore the Vale’s authority.
Setting and Strategic Importance
The Bite enters the history of Aegon’s reign as a maritime route into the Three Sisters. To put down the rebellion, the king ordered Torrhen Stark, Warden of the North, to act; a northern army sailed from White Harbor aboard hired Braavosi galleys under Ser Warrick Manderly. The expedition joined northern power to ships from across the Narrow Sea, reflecting the practical difficulty of reaching the islands after the destruction of the Arryn fleet.
The Sistermen’s Rebellion
Amid the chaos of the Conquest, the lords of the Three Sisters declared themselves a free nation and crowned Lady Marla of House Sunderland queen. The decisive show of force came at Sisterton: the sight of the northern sails was followed by the appearance of Queen Visenya and Vhagar overhead. The Sistermen lost heart and deposed Marla in favor of her younger brother. Steffon Sunderland renewed his fealty to the Eyrie, knelt to Queen Visenya, and surrendered his sons as hostages—one to be fostered with the Manderlys and the other with the Arryns.
Settlement and Historical Significance
The rebellion’s settlement restored the islands to the Vale’s allegiance, while the former queen was exiled and imprisoned. Five years later her tongue was removed; she spent the rest of her life with the Silent Sisters, tending to the noble dead. The episode gives the Bite a place in the account of how Aegon’s rule was consolidated beyond the initial submission of the mainland: here, naval access and the spectacle of a dragon helped end a short-lived bid for independence, followed by hostages and lasting personal punishment.
